Reflection: Jia En

Pre-camp reflections

Read the introduction, objectives and theoretical background to the project and then answer the following questions:
  •      What interests you about this project?
For the extraction of caffeine from beverages, I'm interested in knowing how the caffeine extracted can be put into use whether to harm or to cure us, and whether there are other uses to it.

For the fastest ball challenge, I want to be able to have hands on experience on building the setup itself and try to apply the Physic laws and the different types of energy that we learnt last year in science.

  •       What do you want to learn by doing this project?
I want to learn about the chemical caffeine's properties and the usage of it in other edible items besides beverages and whether it has a positive or negative effect on humans, and whether it can be used to cure some diseases in the extraction of caffeine from beverages.

From the fastest ball challenge, I wish to learn about the factors that will be affecting the ball's speed and accuracy in the path it takes and the effects of the laws on the ball, and also the different equipments or items that will aid the ball in achieving the fastest possible speed to finish the track/course.

  •       What questions do you have about this project?
     From the extraction of caffeine:
-Is there a certain amount of caffeine in something, or mixed with a substance, that will make it harmful or a cure?
-Will there be any application of this project to real life situations?
      From the fastest ball challenge:
-Will this be applicable in real life?

  •      What do you personally want to have achieved by the end of this project?
I personally want to achieve more knowledge and to complete these two projects well, and to know how the information can help us in the future, or in real life.

Reflections on Plenary Sessions

For each plenary session, consolidate your learning by answering the following questions:
  •     What are your key learning points?
Plenary Session 1:
-since the area near the subduction zone is cold, the plate gets stuck causing both plates to be locked together
-when locked, the plate which is being sub-ducted under gets squeezed
-when the pressure built up is too much for the plate to handle, a mega-thrust is formed
-plate gets thrust up, resulting in tsunamis.
-tsunami deposits contains micro-organisms from the ocean
-corals can be used to study when a tsunami happens and roughly when an earthquake happened/will happen

Plenary Session 2:
-Types of animation are stop motion, 2D Animation, 3D Animation
-Uses maths to calculate the angles of light and to make the program for animating
-Maths used are: geometric modeling, linear algebra, calculus
-Laws of Physic are used
-IT is used to tackle challenges, provide effective solution for the community, and uses science, technology, art and creativity

Plenary of Session 3:
-Smaller size for a fixed volume=larger surface area
-materials with ten times the strength of steel and only a small fraction of the weight
-shrinking the information housed at the library of congress into a device the size of a sugar cube
-detecting cancerous tumors when they are only a few cells in size
-biodegradable stents
-the amount of transistors growing in in chips
-artificial photosynthesis
-Nano-materials coated with FGM for protection

  •      What new questions do you have about the topic?
-Are we able to make use of biotechnology and IT to produce a better medicine for cancer treatments?

Reflections on Applied Project Challenge: Your Accomplishments
  • Discuss how the project has deepened your understanding and broadened your awareness of the selected discipline.
Caffeine extraction from beverages:
-realised how caffeine actually looks like, and how the extraction of it can produce decaffeinated
beverages
     - chemicals can be harmful or a potential cure for diseases depending on the other components of mixtures they are being mixed with

Fastest ball challenge:
-it allows me to apply my Secondary 1 knowledge of Physics in this challenge

  • What do you now understand about this discipline that you were unaware of at the beginning?
Caffeine extraction from beverages:
      -
  • Describe how what you have learned from doing this project can be connected to what you are learning at school.
  • Describe how you can apply what you have learned from doing this project.
  •  At the end of the project, what new questions do you now have?
