Our Achievements (Extraction of Caffeine From Beverages)

  • What did you achieve by completing this project? When answering this question, consider both personal and academic development.
  •  We were taught and were shown the different stages of filtration that has to take place in order to extract caffeine from tea bags. We also learnt the various measures to be taken for safety. We had to wear safety goggles, lab coat and also gloves. My group and I also  learnt to manage our time well. We had to try to understand everything by ourselves and also make sure we don't get left behind by everyone else. We had to plan our time really well in order to complete the project.
  •
  • Post photographs and videos that you recorded during the project here.
  • We didn't bring in our cameras or phones into the lab as we were concerned if it could be contaminated.

  • Describe how the design of your experiment or the design of your product allowed you to achieve the projects desired outcomes.
  •  The chemicals were to separate the caffeine from all the other elements that are in the tea bags. These helped in the extraction of the caffeine from beverages which in this case is the tea bags.

  • Identify possible limitations (restrictions) to your project. When answering this question, consider the design of your experiment or the design of your product.
  • The caffeine can only be extracted to a certain extend but may still be contaminated. Therefore, the results won't be as accurate but the caffeine extracted can still be clearly seen in a light green powder.

  • Suggest possible improvements that could be made in order to minimize the limitations that you have identified.
  • Try using different methods to extract the caffeine.
